My main critique of Who Do You Think You Are? is the lack of support the celebrities get during their process. Yes, they have genealogists who are probably aware of how deeply touched people are when they find our about their ancestry, yet they may not be spiritually prepared to cope and guide people when the shadow comes up in their work. Also, it seems like the celebrities are not allowed to talk to their own families during the process! Our Elder, Dr. Apela Colorado, taught us that this process has to be done in a group.
That said, last week’s show with Emmitt Smith was even more moving than the show with Sarah Jessica Parker. I think it may have been because he expressed more awareness that his ancestry held secrets and that he needed to know them. At the end Emmitt says, “I have found what I was looking for. I can hear my ancestors, I can feel it, I can hear it, that they were crying out, ‘Thank you, thank you. My soul is not lost. My great great great great great great grandson Emmitt James Smith the third has found me and the prodigal son has come home.’ ” How satisfiying!
